A reimagined approach

Abstract Person Waving Hello

Communal Table Wellness was born out of a deep yearning for connections and an eagerness to broaden how wellness is defined and practiced.

So often, making health changes feel like lonesome solo journeys. By coming together, we can tap into the collective wisdom and creativity that bubble up when we’re in community.

Nutrition makes up a large part of Communal Table Wellness but there’s also plenty of room to explore our food context. Whether that’s cultural or family traditions, the many thoughts and feelings about food and the body, or how to care for the environment through eating habits. Occasionally we’ll also branch out to other wellness dimensions like emotional, social, and physical health because they’re essential for overall wellbeing.

Communal Table Wellness strives to be a nurturing, empowering, and inclusive space. This space was made particularly with Asian immigrants and children of immigrants in mind. People of any size, gender identity, religious background, sexual orientation, and ethnicity are welcome.

Elizabeth Lee, MS, RD
Owner - Dietitian - Coach - Inquisitive Spirit

In my years of being a dietitian and a human, I’ve witnessed countless nutrition myths being peddled and approaches that treat the body as a giant calculator of mere inputs and outputs (looking at you, calorie counting!).

My approach to wellness is shaped by many facets of life and continues to evolve. I’ll never claim to have all the answers but my inquisitive spirit can and will definitely find them!

I’m also a first-generation Asian American who lived in Hong Kong for a decade. People who straddle between two or more cultures may resonate with this - I’ve felt the pressure to assimilate while hanging onto my parents’ and my food traditions. Nutrition science and diet culture will tell me I shouldn’t have my favorite cha chaan teng milk tea and egg tarts because they’re “junk food” (whatever that means). But no amount of nutrition science can reason me out of enjoying them because I find so much meaning and memories in these foods.

So all that to say I’m here to challenge the narrow definition of health that has dominated our wellness culture. I’ll say it here and as many times as needed from the highest roof tops and mountain peaks: wellness needs to stop sending us on guilt trips and should be centered on our social, cultural, and economic context! 📣

Communal Table Wellness is my offering to foster and restore healthier relationships with food, cultures, and bodies. Together, let’s untangle health from weight, morality from food choices, and judgement from eating.

Philosophy about food & health:

Food is a key to health but not the only key.

Flexibility over rules and rigidity. Enjoyment over shame and judgement.

Eating can be both physically nourishing and psychologically satisfying.

Food memories, cultures, and traditions deserve to be honored.

Pursuit of health can exist without fixation on weight.

Under no circumstances should anyone ever yuck someone else’s yum.
